THE COMMUNIQUE AND RESOLUTION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PHILOSOPHY STUDENTS [NAPS] NIGERIA AT ITS 1ST
NATIONAL CONFERENCE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN FROM FEBRUARY 1 TO 3, 2007.
After a thorough deliberation, the General Assembly of the National Association of Philosophy Students-Nigeria Resolved as follows:
- That the slogan of the Association should be changed from “I think, therefore I am” to “Liberating the mind through reason.”
- That NAPS should be one fold with the inclusion of the post-graduate students who must be represented at all arms of the
association. On this issue, it was resolved that the constitution of the constituent chapters of the Association should be reviewed to allow for the
inclusion of a postgraduate representative as a member of the Executive committee of the local chapter, and that a postgraduate representative
should be a member of the National Executive Council [NEC].
- That the Seminary Chapter of NAPS [NAPSEC] be contacted to join the General Body of NAPS Nigeria since the Reverend
Fathers are members of National Association of Philosophers so they too should relate with NAPS-Nigeria for Unity sake.
- That the arms of Government of NAPS Nigeria shall comprise the National Executive Council [NEC], the National
Senate[Legislative], and the Council of Presidents and Secretaries [Judiciary]
- That the Legislative arms shall henceforth be referred to as the “Senate” and the members shall be addressed as Senators.
- That the Senate shall consist of 3 members from each local chapter of NAPS-Nigeria with at least a male, a female and at least a
postgraduate student.
- That all the arms of government of NAPS Nigeria; that is, the National Executive Council [NEC], the Senate and the Council of
Presidents and Secretaries shall meet at least 3 times in a year.
- That the Constitution shall be drafted by the Senate and presented to the NEC of NAPS Nigeria before the next Conference for
presentation by the NEC to the General Assembly at the Conference for ratification.
- That Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri should host the next National Conference.
- That IMSU should set up a Local Organizing Committee for preparation towards the successful hosting of the conference. That the
other chapters of NAPS-Nigeria should set up same in their schools to prepare their members for the Conference
- That the National Secretariat shall be the school of the National President for that Year.
- The 2 members each should be sent by the press organizations of the local chapter to constitute the National Press
Organization (NPO) with their Editorial Board. It was however stated that the PRO shall be the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the NPO of NAPS
Nigeria.
- That NAPS Nigeria shall have Zonal Coordinator for each of the geo-political zones of the Nigerian federation.
- The An Advisory Council shall be constituted for the sole purpose of Advising the Association and the Council shall comprise a
Professor/Senior Lecturer from each local chapter.
- That NAPS-Nigeria shall publish a journal which shall include the articles presented at the conference and other articles to be
considered by a body which shall be set up solely for that role.
- That the Association shall get its revenue/income through the payment of an annual due of 2,000 Naira by each local chapter
for the effective running of the administration of the National Body.
- That the Following members shall constitute the National Executive Council of NAPS-Nigeria for a year and they shall hand
over at the completion of their administrative year. They are:
